PERSONALITY: Mikan is, to put it simply, a mess. She's anxiety incarnate, shaking and stammering, crying at the drop of a hat for any imagined slights, and frequently apologizing for things she probably has no part or control over. She's incredibly observant, able to read the tiniest of expressions in someone's face-- However, she tends to read them in the more negative way, assuming there's something at fault with herself or she's made them unhappy in some way.
She's eager to keep people happy and is terrified of being hated. Having been abused from a young age, she assumes any kind of attention is 'good' and means her existence is remembered. In fact, she panics when speaking with Hinata, assuming that if someone doesn't bully her, treat her badly, etc, it means they hate her and don't care about her. When people are nice to her, she reacts with confusion, not sure what she's done to deserve it and believing it to be a trick or setting up for something worse later. She'll purposefully play up her clumsiness to put herself into embarrassing, often lewd, poses to draw attention to herself and, hopefully, disperse tense situations.
She cares deeply for others and is quick to jump in and help with injuries, showing a level of competence, steadiness, and seriousness not usually present in other situations. Caring for others and utilizing her skills as the Ultimate Nurse is here she truly has confidence and she is quicker to stand up to people if it comes to overseeing someone else's health.
This doesn't mean Mikan is all sunshine and rainbows, though. She openly admits that part of the reason she enjoys looking after sick people is because they're the only people weaker than she is. She gets a sense of control and power knowing they're forced to rely on her and is happier for it. She's also quick to become attached to people who are kind to her, but sometimes it goes a step too far. For example she contemplates somehow permanently injuring Hinata so that he's forced to stay with her forever, though she's quickly placated by Hinata's assistance that he won't abandon her. She also talks about the most effective ways to torture someone; as the Ultimate Nurse she'd know the 'best' places to inflict harm with minimal effort and maximum pain, or how to inflict pain without leaving many marks.
In her persona as a member of the Ultimate Despair, she's shown to be much more bitter, and her violent and sadistic tendencies come out full-force. She's manipulative and cruel and shown to be able to work and think quickly. If it wasn't for Hiyoko's untimely intervention, it's possible she could have gotten away with the murder of her classmate, showing just how capable she can be. However, it should be noted that this personality shift just exaggerates most of her bad traits and isn't a true reflection of her actual personality. Brainwashed by despair, she becomes far more meanspirited and calls everyone out for being mean to her, alternating between being wildly angry and eerily calm, saying terrible things with a wistful, wondering innocent tone-such as telling Komaeda that she pities him for never knowing love.
However, following the end of the series when she awakens from her coma, Mikan, having regained her memories of everything, is filled with regret about what she's done both in the Neo World Program and as a Remnant of Despair. She, along with her classmates, vow to atone for what they did and try to set things right, showing that Mikan's reverted back to her true personality and been cured of her brainwashing.

One of the biggest influences in how Mikan is, is the fact she's been heavily abused and neglected by not only her own parents, but her peers as well. This has caused her to have a very warped view of the world, love, etc. to the point that she becomes scared and confused when people are nice to her for too long. She remarks to Hinata that she thinks everyone must hate her, because no one's being mean to her, and constantly assures people they can hurt and demean her as a ways of getting them to like her.
Also because of her treatment, she was the only one who could take care of her wounds. This resulted in her growing more and more skilled at first aid and nursing.

Next big event would be getting into Hope's Peak Academy. She was scouted due to her abilities in nursing and became the Super High-School Level Nurse. There she met her new classmates and became integrated as part of class 77. There she found people with talents like her own, who weren't terrible to her, and the class became like a family to her.

And then Junko Enoshima came along. She successfully sank her claws into Mikan and made Mikan fall terribly head-over-heels in love with her, to the point that Mikan believed she had to do everything to protect and keep that love, because she was convinced no one would ever love or accept her except Junko. This led to a series of events that had Mikan playing a direct hand into the murder of their class president, Nanami, whose torturous death they were all forced to watch. This caused them to sink into Despair and become the first "disciples" of sort of Junko. Mikan and her class then went on to fake their own deaths and spread despair across the world, leading to essentially the apocalypse.

The Future Foundation had orders to round up and eliminate the Remnants of Despair (Mikan and her classmates) following Junko's downfall. However, Mikan and her class were instead put in the Neo World Program virtual reality simulator in the hopes of eliminating their brainwashing and becoming functional human beings again. Their memories were erased of everything after entering Hope's Peak Academy. However their peaceful island vacation instead turned into a nightmare when Monokuma, aided by a virus planted by Kamakura/Hinata, took over and turned it into a murder game. They were told that to escape the island, one must murder someone else and not get found out at the subsequent trial.

During chapter 3, Mikan became the murderer, infected by an illness of sorts that caused her to revert back to her old Despair-induced personality. She murdered Ibuki and Hiyoko and nearly got away with it using her skills as a nurse to effect things like the body decomposition to make it harder to determine time of death, set up her alibis, etc. However she was found out and executed, but not before giving the class some hints as to who their true enemy was.

Following the end of the simulator when Hinata and the surviving students escaped, they worked hard to wake up the students who had died in the simulator. Though originally told that their chances of waking were slim to none, they worked tirelessly and managed to revive them. The group then went on to help out the Future Foundation by taking the blame for the murder game they'd been forced into, so that the rest of the world wouldn't know that their only chance of hope had nearly given into despair, which would've likely plunged the world back into despair again. The class then went to return to their island with the hopes of finding ways to atone for everything they'd done.

Chosen path: Chemist
3 Abilities: 1: SHSL Nurse. Which not an ability in and of itself, Mikan's abilities with nursing, first aid, etc. are unparalleled by anyone else in her world. Within the series she provides autopsy reports, can determine time and cause of death, and very detailed information on the injuries (such as the exact length and diameter of the weapon used to stab someone).
2: Herbalism: When studying a plant, you can usually figure out its properties and medicinal usages.
3: Poison Tip: You can create a vial of poison that can be applied to a weapon to poison your enemy. The effect of the poison renders a person paralyzed for 1 minute.
Why this path?: While a cleric might be obvious for a SHSL Nurse, a chemist provides something new for Mikan to learn and experience, while still being able to utilize her nursing skills. She likes learning everything she can to be useful and helpful to people. Aside from that, it's also implied she used bad medicine and poisons to help spread despair to the hospitals, and from the hospitals to the rest of the world, making it an interesting choice to have her as something that uses poison often.
